We began our stay at the Hotel Nacional, the grand old former playground
of mafioso and Hollywood stars prior to the revolution. The exterior and
lobby reflect the Nacional's glory days. The guest rooms and other areas
are more indicative of how Cuba is stuck in the 1950's. The power
failed briefly at least three times our first night there.

The hotel grounds include trenches and bunkers from the missle crisis of 1963.

 

MIRAMAR
Prior to 1959, this neighborhood was home to many of Havana's
wealthier residents. There are many large houses and mansions here.
Most are now embassies and foreign corporate headquarters.
